The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has reminded schools employing foreign nationals to ensure they have the required work permits and comply with the terms of their employment contracts.
Labor Secretary Francis N. Tolentino said foreign nationals must secure an Alien Employment Permit (AEP) before they can legally work in the Philippines, stressing that an Alien Certificate of Registration (ACR) only allows residency.
“When you have the ACR, you’re allowed to reside in the Philippines. When you have the AEP, you’re allowed to work. That’s the difference,” he said.
Tolentino warned that foreign workers and employers who fail to comply with the requirement may face legal penalties.
He also urged schools to ensure that the duties of foreign employees remain within the scope of their contracts.
The reminder came amid an ongoing DOLE investigation involving Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin.
Tolentino earlier said Baldwin’s camp has until June 25 to submit a verified answer and supporting documents, while a formal hearing is set on June 29. (Vito Barcelo Jr.)
