Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), operator of Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), maintained uninterrupted train operations across the LRT-1 system despite tropical storms and monsoon rains that triggered widespread class and work suspensions in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
The rail operator served an average daily ridership of 376,000 passengers in August 2026 as commuters relied on LRT-1 during weather-related disruptions.
LRMC president and chief executive Enrico Benipayo said the company remains committed to providing safe and reliable service. “At LRMC, our commitment to providing a safe, reliable, and seamless journey for our passengers is absolute. Every challenge presents an opportunity for us to refine our operations and reinforce the standards of service our commuters deserve,” he said.
“By acting swiftly on feedback and continuously upgrading our protocols, we ensure that LRT-1 remains a safe and dependable mobility partner for every Filipino, even during severe weather,” he said.
LRMC moved quickly to address an isolated water leak reported inside one light rail vehicle (LRV) of a fourth-generation train set during heavy rainfall. The company’s maintenance team investigated the issue and traced it to a defective air-conditioning unit (ACU) drain line valve that failed prematurely, before its expected service life of three to five years.
LRMC replaced the affected component and cleared the train set for commercial operations after comprehensive safety and performance inspections.
The company said it is enhancing its preventive maintenance program to minimize the risk of similar problems across its fleet.
